I don't use the word unique lightly here: Tanaka-San's ideas didn't just usher in a new design paradigm in horology, it ushered in a new Japanese design paradigm in horology. It is the incorporation of Japanese aesthetics especially what scholars call the Notan, or the dynamic interaction between dark and light that, in my view, created a watershed moment in the industry. It was a stake-in-the-ground moment that truly distinguished Eastern and Western watchmaking. The industry would never be the same from then on.For this shot, I wanted to highlight the particulars of the multiple-angled case and showcase how salient the no-bezel implementation is. I met the seller of the watch and he happened to be the son of the original owner. He told me about how he found the watch hiding in a drawer in his house, and it turns out it had been given to his father in the '70s when he started working as a commercial diver. The watch clearly went through a lot under his ownership. It is a tool watch, after all!I've chosen to keep the watch in its original condition as it's not every day you find a completely original vintage diver that has spent most of its life being used for its intended purpose. I took this shot during lockdown. Working from home has meant that I always have my watches and camera nearby and they've provided me with a nice escape from the stresses of work and the current state of the world.
